Like many Canadian artists of his generation, Robert Pilot attended the Académie Julian in Paris. He studied there from 1920 to 1922, exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1922, the likely period in which this work was produced. With a rich handling of light, Pilot captures a vibrant scene in Paris’ Luxembourg Gardens. The postcard sized board on which the painting is produced is referred to a as pochade, and was a support favoured for its portability by French artists of the time and by fellow Canadians like Clarence Gagnon and J.W. Morrice. The statue high atop a pillar on the left of the composition appears to be "David vainqueur de Goliath," which would place this scene at the north end of the Grand basin facing the Palais de Luxembourg. In its lush vibrancy, this intimate oil sketch is a celebration of the European influences at the foundations of Canadian Impressionism.
