1978

Industrialist and art collector Kenneth G. Heffel founded Kenneth G. Heffel Fine Art Inc. in a former Royal Bank of Canada heritage building on Granville Street in South Granville’s gallery row. Charismatic Kenneth Heffel became known for buying and selling the finest works of art by Canada’s pre-eminent artists.
1980

The landmark exhibition The Group of Seven and Their Contemporaries established the gallery's reputation for presenting museum-quality exhibitions and important private collections, setting a standard that would define Heffel's approach for decades to come.
1987

Following Kenneth Heffel's passing, David and Robert Heffel assumed leadership of the family business and established Heffel Gallery Limited, continuing their father's commitment to scholarship, connoisseurship and exceptional client service.
1987 - 1994

Heffel presented numerous important exhibitions featuring artists including Emily Carr, Lawren Harris, Alex Colville, E.J. Hughes, Guido Molinari, Jean McEwen, David Blackwood and Toni Onley, further establishing the gallery as one of Canada's leading specialists in historical and contemporary Canadian art.
1995

Heffel Fine Art Auction House was established. The inaugural live auction surpassed $1 million in sales, immediately achieving a milestone originally envisioned as a five-year goal and marking the beginning of a new chapter for the company.
1999

Heffel became the first fine art auction house in Canada to launch monthly online auctions and one of the earliest auction houses in the world to embrace digital art sales. At a time when internet commerce was still in its infancy, Heffel recognized the potential of technology to expand access to the art market, laying the foundation for the company's international reach and industry-leading online platform. The company also established its semi-annual Spring and Fall Live Auctions.
2000

Heffel was a global pioneer in the launching of the first real-time web streaming of there May 2000 live auction which feature the sale of Emily Carr’s War Canoes canvas for the record setting $1,018,750.
2002 - 2003

Heffel expanded nationally with the opening of its Toronto gallery and the introduction of live auction previews in Eastern Canada. In 2003, the company held its first live auction in Toronto, establishing the national auction format that continues today.
2004 - 2005

Heffel established itself as Canada's leading fine art auction house through a series of record-setting sales, including new auction records for Emily Carr, E.J. Hughes and Maurice Cullen. The opening of the Montreal gallery further strengthened the company's national presence.
2006 - 2007

Heffel continued to redefine the Canadian auction market through record prices for Lawren Harris and Jean Paul Riopelle, while its online auctions surpassed $1 million for the first time. In 2007, the Spring Live Auction realized more than $23 million, establishing a new Canadian auction record. During the year, Heffel sold nine of the ten Canadian paintings that achieved prices above $1 million and expanded westward with the opening of its Calgary office.
2008

Recognizing the growing strength of the contemporary art market, Heffel introduced dedicated Post-War & Contemporary Art sessions, helping redefine the structure of Canadian fine art auctions and expanding opportunities for collectors and consignors alike.
2009 - 2011

The consignment of the Helen E. Band Estate became one of the most significant in Canadian auction history, highlighted by Lawren Harris's The Old Stump, Lake Superior, which established a new auction record for both the artist and a Group of Seven work. During this period, Heffel surpassed $300 million in cumulative auction sales, while the Post-War & Contemporary Art session exceeded the Fine Canadian Art session in total sales for the first time, reflecting an important shift in the Canadian art market.
2013

Emily Carr's The Crazy Stair (The Crooked Staircase) sold for $3.39 million, establishing a new auction record for the artist, the highest price achieved for a work by a Canadian female artist and one of the most important results in Canadian art auction history.
2014

Building on more than fifteen years of digital innovation, Heffel launched HO2, a specialized online platform designed to assist corporations and institutions with the strategic deaccessioning of significant art collections, reinforcing the company's leadership in customized client services..
2015

Heffel expanded the international scope of its live auctions by welcoming Post-War & Contemporary art from around the world. Continued investment and expansion in its Toronto, Calgary, Montreal and Vancouver facilities reflected the company's growing national operations and expanding client base.

In 2015 Heffel acquires and develops a purpose improved warehouse facility in North Vancouver offering secured and professional fine art storage and transportation support to our expanding collector base needs.

2016

Heffel's Fall Live Auction became the highest-grossing fine art auction in Canadian history, realizing more than $42 million. During the sale, Lawren Harris's Mountain Forms sold for $11.21 million, establishing a new auction record for both the artist and a Canadian work of art. Heffel was honoured to present the incredible collection of Peter & Joanne Brown in the fall sale, one of the finest private collections in Canada.

Heffel ranked among the Top 25 auction houses worldwide. Rankings were based on Blouin Art Sales Index (BASI) data reflected 2016 global sales. Heffel was the only Canadian auction house included in the Top 25.

2017

Heffel continued to elevate the international profile of Canadian art when Jean Paul Riopelle's Vent du nord sold for $7.44 million, establishing a new world auction record for the artist. The sale attracted bidders from around the globe and became the second-highest price ever achieved for a Canadian work of art at auction, further demonstrating the growing international demand for Canada's most important artists.
2018

In 2018, Heffel was ranked among the top 10 auction houses in the world by one of North America’s most respected art industry publications, Art + Auction. The annual list of the top houses compiled by the prestigious periodical is based on sale values of fine and decorative art lots reported in the Blouin Art Sales Index (BASI).
2020

When the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily brought in-person auctions to a halt, Heffel seamlessly transitioned its live auctions to a fully digital format. Building on more than two decades as a pioneer in online auctions, the company continued to connect consignors and collectors without interruption before welcoming clients back to the saleroom as live auctions resumed through the creation of the Heffel Digital Saleroom.
2021

Heffel established the Heffel Foundation (managed by Aqueduct Foundation, registered charity # 866087034RR0001), which provides ongoing philanthropic support to the visual arts in Canada. The Foundation provides important backing for cherished museums and galleries, scholarships encouraging further education in the arts, and more.
2022

In 2022 Heffel acquires and develops a purpose improved warehouse/gallery facility in Calgary offering secured and professional fine art storage and transportation support to our expanding collector base needs.
2023

Heffel continues to expand their real estate holdings in Toronto’s premium retail district of Yorkville to include multiple retail galleries salons, a dedicated shipping and receiving facility, an independent private sales and executive office facility and the launch of the corporately owned and proprietary live auction Heffel Digital Saleroom facility with leading edge streaming and real time online bidding technology to enhance the in person bidding and saleroom dynamics, in the former Toronto Four Season’s ballroom at Yorkville and Avenue Road.
2024

Heffel presented Legendary: The Collection of Torben V. Kristiansen, one of the most significant private collections to come to market in recent years. The collection continues to be offered through a series of live and online auctions, reflecting Heffel's expertise in presenting important collections through tailored, long-term strategies.
2025

Heffel celebrated the 30th anniversary of Heffel Fine Art Auction House and achieved the highest annual sales in company history, realizing $74 million across live and online auctions. Highlights included the sale of the Hudson's Bay Company Collection, one of the most significant corporate art deaccessions ever presented in Canada, the dedicated catalogue auction of the Lillian Mayland McKimm Collection and the landmark sale of three Group of Seven paintings from the University Club of Toronto. The year reflected the breadth of Heffel's expertise in presenting important private, corporate and institutional collections while reinforcing the company's position as Canada's leading fine art auction house.
In 2025 Heffel Gallery Limited rate the milestone of having sold over $1 billion in sales.
2026

The Spring Live Auction realized more than $22.4 million and was highlighted by the sale of E.J. Hughes's Coastal Boats Near Sidney, BC for $5.7 million, establishing a new world auction record for the artist. Consigned by Emily Carr University of Art + Design in support of student awards, the painting exemplified Heffel's continued leadership in presenting important institutional collections. The auction also established a new auction record for Takao Tanabe and continued Heffel's tradition of achieving exceptional results for Canada's most important works of art.
