Based on the few known examples of A.Y. Jackson’s work confirmed to be of Jackfish Bay, this oil sketch was most likely produced in 1922 on the artist’s second trip to the area with fellow Group of Seven member Lawren Harris. The northern shore of Lake Superior was a location of substantial importance for many members of the Group. Jackson himself maintained the region contained “a sublime order” and A.J. Casson referred to it as “a revelation”, with some of his most important aesthetic breakthroughs occurring on sketching trips to the area later in the decade. Furthermore, the stark imagery of locales such as Pic Island, located approximately 20 km to the east, would massively impact Lawren Harris’ artistic vision and provide him with some of him most important compositions. Rendered in deft complimentary colour choices, and fluid, painterly gestures, this rich plein air sketch was produced at a time and place of significant breakthrough for Jackson and his companions.
