EXHIBITED
The Women's Committee Exhibition, Art Gallery of Toronto, circa 1955

This oil sketch by A.Y. Jackson was exhibited at the Women’s Committee Exhibition in the final years before the Art Gallery of Toronto formally became the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1966. Formed by AGT charitable benefactor Lady Virginia Kemp in 1945, the Women’s Committee’s goal was to expand membership and fundraise, and these exhibitions were part of that mandate. Renamed the Volunteer Committee in 1974, the organization was formally disbanded in 1998 after 50 years of service.

This on-site work features a classic Jackson vista of Georgian Bay, including a foreground tide pool in the region’s famous pink granite, counterpointed by driftwood and sprouts of resilient green vegetation. The island in the far distance serves to express the rugged, expansive energy of an area that inspired Jackson for more than half a century, and continues to inspire artists to this day.
