Prior to 1948, Canadian coins featured an inscription surrounding the bust of George VI that read "GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP" ("George VI By the Grace of God, King and Emperor of India"). Following India's independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, adjustments were necessary for the 1948 coins, requiring the removal of "ET IND:IMP" from the legend. The Royal Canadian Mint awaited the modified matrices and punches from the Royal Mint in London, which arrived significantly late. As such, 1948-dated coins were minted only in the latter part of that year, with the Dollar in particular being extremely sought-after by collectors of that series.
