This dynamic Jack Bush watercolour from 1946 contains elements of what can be referred to as the artist’s transitional period, as his representational practice gradually became more abstracted. It has in the foreground structure, for example, looser bands of colour and slight fracturing of classical perspective. It also bears the motif of the gateway, in this case windows, which was a common theme in this era of Bush’s work, perhaps indicative of his own psychological struggles with his changing nature as an artist.
It is also important to note that the artist’s verso inscription of “Thunder Bay” does not refer to the city, but, in fact, to the body of water in Georgian Bay off the shore of the township of Thunder Beach, which was a summer destination for the artist and his family.
