EXHIBITED
Galerie Morency, Québec, Jean Paul Lemieux et Madeline Des Rosiers, November 15 - 22, 1938
Le Sept de trèfle was executed when Lemieux was a student at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, from which he graduated in 1934. This still life of disparate objects probably had significance for Jean Paul Lemieux, who fully embraced this early work, as he exhibited Le Sept de trèfle again, accompanied by Nature morte aux cartes (1931) in 1938. This was his first exhibition at the Galerie Morency in Quebec City, shortly after his appointment as professor at the École des beaux-arts de Québec. Since 1938, this work has only reappeared on the Canadian art market in 2008, and now in 2023.
We thank Michèle Grandbois, author of Jean Paul Lemieux au Musée du Québec, for contributing the above essay, translated from the French, and for researching this work. This work will be included in Grandbois's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
