Following Frank (Franz) Johnston’s tenure as an original member of the Group of Seven, his stylistic approach underwent gradual yet significant transformation. He began to move away from a more rugged approach, common to the Ontario-based pioneers of Canadian Impressionism, and adopted a more romantic style, often focused on the evocative effects of light. Fleeting Clouds sits beautifully at the intersection of these two periods. The textures and palette throughout, particularly in the foreground, are reminiscent of his work done on the famous Group of Seven Algoma boxcar expeditions, while the overall tone and sense of light and shade are very much in line with his best mid-career examples. This shift in style is also reflected in the title he gave this work. His recurring use of gently idyllic titles in this period suggests his ongoing relationship with the rich and lyrical beauty he encountered in nature.
