Evan Penny has received international acclaim for his distorted, hyperrealist sculptures of the human form - made of silicone, pigment and hair, the human forms are often unsettlingly organic in appearance. In Bronze Polymorph, Penny employs a media with no connection to the natural human body, high reflective bronze, to create an enlarged form of the impression created by squeezing clay into the palm of a hand. As with Penny’s distorted portraits, we see similar disorienting and disembodying effects in the reflection. The viewer’s mirrored-self travels and repeats throughout the polished surface creating an oddly familiar and surreal sensation. Bronze Polymorph is an impressive example of Penny’s mastery of mediums and his ability to maintain anatomical accuracy and convey a concept without the inclusion of an obvious narrative. In 2011, Penny remarked, “If there is anything I could hope one might experience in front of the work, it’s a moment of self-awareness, a self-consciousness of one’s own physical experience, how one experiences oneself in space.”

Evan Penny earned an Honours Fine Arts Diploma in 1975, and later completed post-graduate studies in sculpture from the Alberta College of Art. Throughout his career, Penny has taught at the Alberta College of Art, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Ontario College of Art and the Toronto School of Art.
