EXHIBITED
Galerie Simon Blais, Montreal, Rita Letendre - Les Éléments, May 9 to June 30, 2001

“Letendre is a master of colour and light; the fiery quality of her work is significant to what makes it beautiful. Light moves through her work like a beacon of hope, a pathway to somewhere else, and as an uncontainable futurity.”

Wanda Nanibush, “Rita Letendre: Fire and Light”

An important facet of this quote from the catalogue of the Art Gallery of Ontario’s 2017 survey of the work of Rita Letendre is its comprehensiveness. These words describe her explosive, painterly works done in the early 1960s, such as Reflet d’Eden sold by Heffel in June of 2022, as succinctly as it does her hard-edge paintings done a decade later, such as Otilapa sold by Heffel in July of the same year. These words clearly apply to this work, as well, produced over 40 years into her ground-breaking career. Containing swarms of light emanating as though from a storm, works produced in this period often serve as a bridge between those two earlier styles. With boundaries of colour reaching from edge to edge on the canvas, they combine the sculptural expansiveness of her hard-edge period with the powerful, almost drastic expressions of her first painterly breakthroughs.
