Sarah Anne Johnson’s practice uses photography as a base for manipulation, generating images that cross the boundary between documentary and emotive resonance. Group Portrait is taken from her series Tree Planting. In these images, Johnson photographed her friends and co-workers during one of several summer stints working as a tree-reforester in Northern Manitoba. Johnson’s captured moments of backbreaking labour and exhausted leisure are spun together into a sublime utopia of the outdoors. In addition to portraits and landscapes, she also produced several images constructed from modeling clay. Based on real events that couldn’t be photographed at the time, these handmade dioramas seem to blend fact with fiction, capturing reconstructed moments in time that have been mediated by the distance of memory and the physical immediacy of sculpture.
