Adad Hannah is a Vancouver artist born in New York and raised in Israel and England. He has a Ph.D and an MFA from Concordia University, Montreal, and a BFA from Emily Carr University. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards and has an extensive Canadian and international exhibition history which includes Des Moines Art Center, Iowa; Centro Multimedia, Mexico City; LEEUM Museum, Seoul; Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; Remai Modern, Saskatoon; and the National Gallery of Canada.

This work takes its impetus from the locomotion studies of pioneering nineteenth century photographer Eadweard Muybridge. Muybridge devised a groundbreaking system to create sequential photographs which capture still images of people and animals in motion. This meant that moments of time too fast for the naked eye to see, were made visible for the first time.

Hannah reimagines Muybridge’s work by creating motion through a series of sequential still images. He poses his subjects to appear as if they have been captured while in motion, and further creates the illusion by using not-quite-invisible “Ninjas,” as he calls them, clad in black, who help pose and support the subjects. In this way Hannah not only offers us a glimpse into his process, but seems to wryly suggest that perhaps these figures are behind the scenes all the time, assisting all figures in motion.
