In addition to Frederick Coburn’s exposure to Impressionism in France, the other influence that affected the course of his work was the advice of painter Maurice Cullen. Coburn spoke openly of Cullen’s guidance away from the sombre, restrained tones of his early work, which were not appropriate for the vibrant light and colour of Canadian winters. Cullen encouraged his use of brighter colours, and Coburn began painting the Quebec winter countryside with a new eye. He began to introduce figures, settling on habitants with horse-drawn sleighs laden with wood as his primary subject matter. In earlier years in Canada, there had been a prevailing bias amongst collectors for traditional European painting with a dark palette and smoky light. However, the Group of Seven awakened appreciation for a truly Canadian landscape, and Watson Art Galleries in Montreal built a market for Coburn’s winter scenes, which were appreciated for their expression of what was truly unique in rural Quebec.
