This early example of A.J. Casson's work in watercolour speaks to his long relationship with this ethereal medium. This work was produced when Casson was still in his mid-20s and employed at the commercial art firm of Rous and Mann, where he apprenticed under Franklin Carmichael. Having already painted with Carmichael and other Group of Seven members since the early 1920s, Casson would be formally invited into the Group in 1926, replacing Frank H. Johnston who had departed for Winnipeg. The guidance and friendship that these important painters provided would help transform him into one of the most renowned and collected artists of his era.

His inclusion of small country homes is a notable aspect of the composition. It illustrates how longstanding Casson's relationship was with the motif of rural architecture within the landscape, expressed throughout his long career with a notable warmth and humanity.
