John Hartman
John Hartman
1950 -
John Hartman has exhibited across Canada and internationally since the early 1970s. Hartman was born in 1950 in Midland, Ontario and educated at McMaster University. His career breakthrough came with Painting the Bay, his 1993 exhibition of large-scale paintings of Georgian Bay at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Known for his thick and evocative paint application, Hartman’s work often combines aerial landscape, narrative and figurative elements to express the essence of place. In 2003, Hartman began working on a series of large-scale paintings of urban environments depicted as living organisms. Recently he has returned to the subject of his home landscape of Georgian Bay. Although he is known primarily as a painter, he is also a printmaker, using various techniques of drypoint, etching, aquatint and sugar-lift, and prints comprise a significant component of his practice. His work is represented in numerous public, private, and corporate collections across Canada and has been the subject of multiple publications. Hartman maintains a studio in Lafontaine, Ontario.
