Angela Grossmann
Angela Grossmann
1955 -
YR
Born in 1955 in London, England, Angela Grossmann has accrued an international reputation as a multimedia artist working within the Canadian art scene since the 1980s. The materiality of Grossmann’s work mainly consists of reused materials such as photographs, postcards and other found objects, used to explore themes of displacement and identity.
Grossman received a degree from Emily Carr College (now the Emily Carr University of Art + Design) in 1985. Grossmann went on to complete an MFA from Concordia University. She has taught at Ottawa University, and at the Emily Carr University.
Throughout her career as an artist, Grossmann has been featured in a wide variety of both solo and group shows. In 1985, an influential exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery entitled Young Romantics featured her work, along with Douglas Coupland, Atilla Richard Lukacs, Graham Gillmore and Derek Root. Grossmann reunited with this group in 2006 to collectively create a sculptural installation entitled Vancouver School. She continues to collaborate with this group for special projects. She exhibited with Diane Farris Gallery from 2004 to 2007, and most recently with Winsor Gallery in Vancouver, from the 2012 to 2017.
Grossmann’s work mainly examines the themes of displacement and social margins, and she uses collaged photographs and discarded material to represent her disadvantaged subjects. The materiality of her work is often mimetic of the subjects that she represents. Notably, in her 2004 series Alpha Girls and her 2006 show Paper Dolls, Grossmann explored coming of age themes. Grossman co-founded the Portfolio Prize Foundation, which financially aids emerging artists.
