From 1973 until 1980, Takao Tanabe was head of the Art Department and Artist-in-Residence at the Banff School of Fine Arts. During that time, he produced work based on the open spaces of the prairie which explored the edge between abstraction and representation. Typical of this part of his oeuvre, he stripped away unessential details and used thin paint washes to depict the transcendent atmosphere he perceived there. In this delicately nuanced painting, Tanabe captures the soft sweep of grasses across the land and the subtle weather effects of the sky above.
