Born in 1951 in Haida Gwaii, Alife Collinson comes from a family of artists and carvers. Descending from the Eagle clan, he is the great grandson of argillite carver Lewis Collinson, grandson of Arthur Moody, and nephew of Rufus Moody. Collinson began carving at a young age, learning techniques from his family, and from carver and silversmith Pat McGuire. McGuire’s influence is evident in Collinson's strong, sweeping linework and contained finish.

Collinson’s preferred media is argillite, specifically black silt argillite as found in eastern Haida Gwaii near Collinson’s hometown of Skidegate. All seven works in this collection, including five boxes, are primarily made from argillite. Traditionally, Haida boxes were made from red cedar, and served practical uses including food or clothing storage. In choosing to make boxes from argrillite, with their additional sculptural figures and material adornments, Collinson's creations become exquisite and intricate works of art.

In 2018, the Haida Gwaii Museum held an exhibition of Collinson’s work.
