Born in England, Julian Ashton studied at the West London School of Art, and later, briefly at the Académie Julian in Paris. During his studies he trained in oil painting, watercolour and graphics, learning the traditional practices of the time, while being exposed to the philosophies and techniques of his peers.

When Ashton moved to Melbourne in 1878 to work for the Illustrated Australian News, it was the beginning of a long and important career, not only as a successful artist, but also as a teacher and advocate of Australian art.

Ashton had a background in the contemporary French realism of the Barbizon School, which emphasized painting en plein air and that laid the basis for the Impressionist movement. Berry Pickers demonstrates Ashton’s strong technical abilities and his interest in capturing local life and scenery, and it is an excellent example of the artist’s work during the 1870s. Painted contre-jour, the light illuminates the scene from behind, and the thinly painted backdrop of sky adds perspective and depth to the work. The lush vegetation is detailed, and sophisticated in tone and texture, and Ashton’s skill is exhibited in his treatment of the figures and their beautiful clothing, which foreshadows his later success as a portrait painter.
