Although depictions of Georgian Bay a hallmark of Ontario art history in general and the works of many members of the Group of Seven in particular, Franz Johnston’s paintings of that landscape are comparatively rare, particularly in this intimate size. One reason for the relative scarcity of this subject in Johnston’s body of work was his departure from Ontario shortly after the Group of Seven’s first formal exhibition in 1920. He would return to the area for holidays and even opened a summer art school in Midland in 1930, but he had less regular access to the region than many of the artists with whom he’s most closely associated. Here, he expresses the region’s famous pink granite and resilient, windswept trees with a notable freshness and delicacy of touch. With its classic composition and gentle sense of light, Johnston captures an idyllic summer day in one of Canada’s most beloved locales.
