Alexandra Luke was the nom de plume of Margaret Alexandra McLaughlin (née Luke), a key artist in the development of abstract painting in Canada. Prior to becoming a member of Toronto’s Painters 11, Luke studied with Hans Hoffman in New England in the late 1940s, where she began her explorations into abstraction. Luke would go on to organize the Canadian Abstract Exhibition, a foundational non-objective painting exhibition held at Adelaide House in Oshawa in 1952 and touring to Toronto’s Hart House the following year. By 1954, Painters 11 would hold their first gallery exhibition at Toronto’s Roberts Gallery, forever changing art history in Canada.

This dynamic work showcases Luke impressive grasp of her medium, using complimentary colours and jazz-like shapes to present a swirling dance of form. A comparable, larger work by Luke titled Blue Dynasty, circa 1955, hangs in the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, which houses the world’s most prominent collection of works by Painters 11.
