PROVENANCE
An Important Private Collection, Toronto

This work by Painters Eleven member Kazuo Nakamura stylistically aligns to what can be classified as the artist’s “Structures” works. This thematic grouping could be further subdivided into “Inner” and “Outer” categories. A key example of these “Inner” works would be Inner Structure, whereas a key example of the “outer” would be Fortress, both held in the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario. Fascinatingly, these extremely divergent works were both produced 1956, and express a dual approach to abstraction in Nakamura’s practice. Upward stands clearly within the “Outer Structures” category, as does Structure, 1962, sold by Heffel in November 2023. The stark forms and dramatic lighting of these works stand in wonderful counterpoint to the floating, amorphous tone of his “Inner” works, showcasing the multifaceted and distinctive vision of one of Canada’s most important artists.

The artist's inscription of "Painters Eleven" on his verso label strongly suggests this work was produced in the 1950s, before the formal disbandment of Painters 11 in 1960.
