In the pre-World War II years, Walter Engel, along with several family members, fled Austria for Bogota, Colombia. By the time he moved to Canada after World War II, Engel had become a well-respected art writer and critic and an early champion of the work of Fernando Botero. He and his wife opened their Toronto gallery in the late 1950s where they featured works by Botero, Wilfredo Lam, Franz Masereel and many other European and South American artists.

Included with this lot are the following documents: the original invoice; a letter of certification by Walter Engel; the original Walter Engel Gallery exhibition invitation which reproduces the work and an original colour photograph of the artist with the work in his Paris studio, 1980.
