Inscribed on a label on verso: "19. 'The Section Foreman's Wife' She is a much forgotten pioneer whom I vowed not to forget because of the necessarily lonely life she is compelled to live. She has to cook, launder, keep the fire going to ward off the piercing cold of the north country, and generally making the house a home for her man to return to at evening. If she had no children of pre-school age there was no one to talk to all day. Many Ukrainians in the city and out of the way places worked on the railways."

Kurelek documented all the aspects of life on the prairies from work to play and was very sensitive to the dramas of human life taking place in the beautiful landscapes he painted. Kurelek’s mother was from a Ukrainian family in Alberta, and he went to Ukrainian night school in Winnipeg, so he was well aware of the life of this ethnic group.

This superb large painting is in the original hand-painted frame made by Kurelek.
