Traffic Jam, also known as Cow and Roadster, is a rare, humorous Maud Lewis painting. Lewis adapted the work from a Maclean’s magazine cover from April 1956 by Oscar Cahén, and has given it her unique style. As with most of her paintings, she created an image that became serial. In other words, she painted many similar images, but no two works are identical. The term serial image was first used in connection with Lewis in an article by Harold Pearse entitled “The Serial Imagery of Maud Lewis”, published in Arts Atlantic in 1997. Traffic Jam is a strong painting that shows fine precision. Although this painting may have been done after 1956, the strength of the work makes it appear to be earlier.
