Syed Haider Raza left India for France in October 1950 to study at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts on a French government scholarship. When he completed his studies in 1953, he traveled across Europe and continued to paint and exhibit in Paris. He was eager to absorb the thriving art scene and learn from the Post-Impressonists’ examples of colour and composition, specifically the work of Paul Cezanne. During this period, mountains, churches and villages emerged as significant motifs in Raza’s work. In this energetic and expressive piece, the thick impasto and brilliant zones of colour reflect the rolling terrain of rural France. Works from this period demonstrate a turning-point in Raza’s artistic development as the subject matter is not lost but the painterly application and use of colour become the elements of primary importance. The village emerges from the darkness of the night with voluptous impasto and a bright sense of vitality. Raza is one of India’s leading modern masters, and works such as this are a testament to his important artistic development in France and the intensely expressive works he produced during this early period.
