David Milne produced several works in 1936 and 1937 concentrating on close-ups of branches, such as Snowy Twigs, Snowy Oak Branch, Ice on the Branches, and this delightful work. This simple painting of branch tops and sky contains hallmarks of Milne’s work—his unique use of line, emphasized by black paint, and his sure and seemingly effortless brushwork, which, using scumbled pigments of cerulean and pinkish-beige, gives the impression of a lightly clouded blue sky. Milne pulls the viewer’s eye rhythmically along the branch tops, each of which is encrusted with snow and tipped with red. The “aesthetic emotion” Milne has created here is one of liveliness, brightness, open space and a delight in nature.
