A.Y. Jackson’s keen powers of observation focused on those little details of rural Quebec life that made it so unique, such as the oft-depicted horse-drawn cart, the early mode of transport in small villages. As his niece Naomi Jackson Groves noted, “Horses were in for AY.” So were traditional barns that sagged with the land, irregular woodpiles, rutted, winding roads and organic snake-fences that followed the curves of hills and hummocks - all greatly pleased Jackson, and are present in the scenes on both sides of this delightful panel. Jackson visited the north shore of the St. Lawrence many times in the 1920s and 1930s, and was documented as sketching specifically in Les Éboulements in 1929, 1930, 1932 and 1935. The name Éboulements or landslide derives from a time in 1663 when the area was rocked by earthquakes for seven months, causing the cliff face to collapse, contributing to the uniqueness of the area’s geography. Jackson, painting on the spot, likely ran out of panels and, in his desire to keep sketching, painted another image on verso.
