Randolph Hewton trained in France along with Group of Seven artist A.Y. Jackson, and was invited to participate in the first Group exhibition in 1920. He was one of the members of Montreal’s Beaver Hall Group and was considered to be a prominent member of that city’s art community. His Quebec landscapes were known for their strength of composition, freshness of colour and simplicity of form, as in this crisp winter rural scene on the St. Lawrence River.
