William Kurelek, raised in a Ukrainian family on farms in Alberta and Manitoba, had a keen interest in farm structures, and the King family farmhouse was a well-built and prosperous one. He also knew the behaviour of animals well. Within this idyllic depiction of a farmhouse is a subtle drama – a pure white cat is watching the birds on the lawn, its intent most likely that of the hunter.
