McLean de peinture canadienne, 19 septembre - 20 octobre 1968, en tournée en 1968-1969 au Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum, Charlottetown; Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton; London Public Library and Art Museum; Winnipeg Art Gallery; Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery, Regina; Edmonton Art Gallery; et la Vancouver Art Gallery, catalogue #40
Even for someone as famously well travelled as A.Y. Jackson, 1951 was a busy year. Between the months of March and October, Jackson traveled to rural Quebec, Edmonton, Georgian Bay, Great Bear Lake, Yellowknife, Southern Alberta, Southern Manitoba, and Northen Ontario. This oil sketch was painted toward the end of these journeys on a brief visit to then Franco-Metis community of La Rivière. Although Jackson painted many prairie scenes, depictions of grain elevators are quite rare in his work. Its locale, too, is notably unique, being one of Jackson’s few depictions of Manitoba to ever be offered at auction.
This work’s provenance is also extremely noteworthy. Its original owner was J.S. McLean, one of the era’s great collectors of Canadian art. His immense collection hung in the offices of his Canadian Packers Ltd, and once included the sketch for Tom Thomson’s The West Wind. Following McLean’s donation of the work to the Ontario Heritage Fund, La Rivière, Manitoba became a part of the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario. After 30 years of careful stewardship, it was offered as a part of A Painter's Vision: A Selection of Works by A.Y. Jackson, the AGO’s 2019 white-glove deaccession partnership with Heffel.
