This brilliant, fresh, and buoyant scene as captured by Arthur Lismer in 1918 was produced during a consequential time in both the artist’s personal history and world history. Two years earlier, Lismer had moved his family from Ontario to Nova Scotia after being appointed principal of Halifax’s Victoria School of Art and Design, settling in Bedford, a suburb 10 kilometers north of the city. The ongoing conflict of World War I had delayed the formalization of The Group of Seven, with A.Y. Jackson and Frederick Varley overseas as official war artists, and other members of the Group involved in various elements of the official war effort. Lismer, too, while narrowly surviving the Halifax Explosion in 1917, made his own contributions, capturing detailed scenes of naval ships coming and going from this same area, such as The Departure of the Troop Ship, Halifax (circa 1916-1917) sold by Heffel in June, 2021, and the major, panoramic canvas Convoy in Bedford Basin (1919), in the Collection of the National War Museum.
