The word Algoma stems from the name of the region’s First Peoples, the Algonquin, and their word for lake, which a glance at a map of the region will affirm: this is lake country. This part of the ancient mountain range that is the Canadian Shield, is all rolling hills separated by lakes. It seems only natural that a dedicated plein air master like A.Y. Jackson would have chosen this subject for another breath-taking depiction of the wilderness.

Unlike many of Jackson’s Quebec landscapes or his western Prairie scenes, where some vestige of human activity in the form of a shack, fence post or a road appears, here we have just wilderness, interpreted by a veteran of the Canadian landscape. Jackson shared a cabin near Wawa, Ontario starting in 1955, which is located in the Algoma District, on the north-east shore of Lake Superior. Based on the maturity of style in this piece, and its title, it is likely that Autumn, Algoma dates from this time.

In this work, Jackson’s signature style emerges in full stride, manifested in the painting’s lively, rhythmic, flowing contours and exceptional attention to a wide array of tertiary colours, punctuated by the brash red-orange in the tree to the left and the vivid green vegetation to the right of the foreground. Vestiges of summer’s warmth seem to linger in the air, as the colours of Canada’s northern wilderness announce the fall in dramatic fashion.
