In the 1960s, Jean Paul Riopelle experimented with a multitude of media, such as ink, gouache, engraving, lithography, collage and pastel. This compelling body of work results from a feeling of ‘’deep-rooted versatility’’ according to art historian Yves Michaud. Specifically speaking of the pastel works, Michaud explains: "Finally, there are the dazzling series of pastels. They too are surprising, and for a simple reason: instead of the built-up adjoining strokes of the paintings, they are made up of overlapping lines. It is as if Matisse-like arabesques suddenly appeared in the midst of Cézanne-like constructions.’’ In this stunning work, Riopelle arranges a complex web-like network of sharp, calligraphic black lines atop hatch-stroked, knotted lines of white, green, red and teal, that together form an organic and dynamic whole, resulting in a remarkably expressive pictorial surface. Michaud continues: "these pastels are related not only to the paintings from the 1950s, with their muddles and visual suffocation, but also to the lyricism of the paintings from the 1970s and 1980s: they have the same fresh gaze.’’
