This fluid, musical work by Alexandra Luke is notable in multiple ways. With regards to its date, 1950 was a period of breakthrough for Luke and her soon-to-be fellow Painter 11 members, with many of them exploring pure abstraction for the first time. In terms of its medium, watercolour was a central means of Luke’s exploration of automatic, intuitive expression, as it was for fellow P11 members Jock MacDonald, Jack Bush, William Ronald, and others. Its provenance is also key, in that Luke’s second husband was Clarence Ewart McLaughlin, grandson of Robert McLaughlin, founder of what would become General Motors, Canada. Through Luke, the gallery in Oshawa, Ontario that bears Robert McLaughlin’s name would become the institution of record for the irreplaceable and pioneering contributions of Painters 11. Intimate and immersive, this work expresses many key facets of an indelible era in Canadian art history.
