PROVENANCE
Don de l’artiste à la collection privée actuelle, Winnipeg

Born in Vancouver, of Russian Mennonite immigrants, Koop later moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she still lives today. Only three years into her degree at the School of Art of the University of Manitoba, she was invited to participate in a group exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 1972. Koop has since been the subject of numerous solo shows, including a major survey exhibition of her work in 2010 organized by the National Gallery of Canada and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

Her practice focuses on a persistent query on the nature of painting, through which she produces engrossing environments of wanderlust. Although she is mainly based in Winnipeg, Koop travels extensively and her memoirs as a globetrotter inform her works. In addition to being one of Canada’s most distinguished contemporary artists, Koop is also deeply committed to community service with her program Art City, a storefront art centre for inner-city youth.

Koop has been awarded numerous prizes, such as the Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals, and the Japan Fund Award from the Canada Council. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Manitoba and in 2006 was appointed a Member of the order of Canada. Her works are part of important collections such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Shanghai Museum of Modern Art, the Reykjavik Museum, Iceland, and the Dallas Museum of Art.
