Port Radium is a mining area on the eastern shore of Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories. A.Y. Jackson first visited the location in 1938 at the invitation of Gilbert LaBine, discoverer of the Eldorado Radium Mine. Being a gregarious and hardy type, Jackson was excited by the prospect of painting and recording his time up there, despite the challenging conditions. Over the years he developed a strong connection with the region and its people, revisiting in 1949 and again in 1959.

Jackson preferred to walk to reach his sketching spots, thereby developing an intimate knowledge of the topography, colours, light and the smallest details of the landscape he was observing. This colourful work is dated September 1959. Jackson noted that by mid-September, in Port Radium, the trees were bare. It seems likely, therefore, that this work was painted in early September, while the leaves were still turning.

This fine sketch includes many of the elements that Jackson is noted for; the delicate depiction of fall colours, the horizontal movement in a darkening sky and an analytical study of the rocks and shrubs in the foreground. Judging by the notation verso (canvas 20 x 25), Jackson felt it was an important work and one worthy of being used for a full-size canvas of the same subject.
