Accompanying this lot is the original pamphlet for The Canadian Art Print Portfolio issued by the Newfoundland Historic Parks Association:
“The Newfoundland Historic Parks Association is pleased to offer a limited edition (100) Art Print Portfolio celebrating the Centennial of Canada’s National Parks. Each print in this Limited Edition Portfolio by twelve of Canada’s most outstanding artists depicts a National Park or National Historic Park in each Province and Territory. The Portfolio’s theme -- a celebration of the nation’s historical, cultural and wilderness heritage -- will be firmly rooted in the finest traditions of Canadian art. Canada’s Parks are a national asset. The common element running through the work of all twelve distinguished artists is an obvious affection for Canada’s wilderness, history and culture as preserved in the National and National Historic Parks. As a major art event, the Portfolio will help focus attention on this rich treasure. Each of the twelve artists selected a park and an artistic medium. The result is a unique and fascinating collection -- what artist Laureat Marois of Quebec has called, “the most impressive art event of the decade”. The Portfolio is as richly varied as the artists who produced it -- from abstracts and high realism to traditional Dorset style. David Blackwood’s etching of L’Anse Aux Meadows, Newfoundland, evokes a brooding spirit of the Viking settlers. In contrast, Ivan Eyre’s work is large and luminous, a surrealistic portrayal of Riding Mountain in Manitoba. Pitaloosie Saila’s “Auyuittuq”, depicts the traditional Inuit lifestyle of the North West Territories. The Newfoundland Historic Parks Association has been a pioneer in the nation-wide movement of private citizens who support government efforts to preserve the country’s natural and cultural heritage. The Association’s activities have been hailed as a substantial contribution to this work. Proceeds from the Canadian Art Print Portfolio will be used to support living history programs in National Historic Parks. Only 100 Canadian Art Print Portfolios will be produced. To ensure distribution throughout the country, a number of sets have been reserved for purchase in each province and territory. This truly unique portfolio is a rare opportunity to own and enjoy a rich and distinctive sampling of art from across Canada by an impressive array of artists.”
