The majority of the few known examples of A.Y. Jackson’s paintings done while visiting the Caribbean island of Tobago are dated to February and March of 1956. On-the-spot oil sketches such as this one document quiet moments in the lives of the local residents, and evocatively express the lush light of the tropical sun. They represent a rare and fascinating element of Jackson’s non-Canadian work.
