Depicting the clear-skyed brightness of mid-day winter, here J.W. Beatty shows his incredible skill with expressing qualities of light. The long show of the church steeple reaching beyond the composition, and the nuanced light and shade of the snowy evergreen to the left are heightened in their impact by Beatty’s deft use of texture and painterly gesture.

The church shown is the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church as it appeared circa 1940.
