EXHIBITED
Cindy Richmond and Brian Foss, Molly Lamb Bobak: A Retrospective, Mackenzie Art Gallery, 1993, similar work listed pages 262 and 272, reproduced, page 84

This idyllic and vibrant depiction of summer sport is one that clearly engaged Molly Lamb Bobak, as there are at least three known versions of this composition. A smaller 4 7/8 x 7 7/8 inch oil sketch, sold by Heffel in January 2021, features the same rich palette and long shadows, as does a larger 30 x 40 inch canvas which was a part of the major 1993 retrospective of the artist's work at the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina. The primary differences between the three versions are the arrangement of the players, and subtle divergences in Bobak’s stylistic approach. This work stands beautifully between the off-hand intimacy of the smaller sketch, and the more detailed execution of the larger canvas, resulting in a warm and romantic post-impressionist feel.
