Born in Vancouver in 1979, Andy Dixon has become known for his bold use of colour and his lively, contemporary approach to traditional art subjects. Before turning to painting full time, Dixon worked as a musician, an experience that continues to influence the rhythm and energy of his visual work. Over the past decade, his paintings have been shown widely in Canada, the United States, and Europe, earning him a growing international following.Much of Dixon’s work centres on reinterpreting classic art historical themes - portraits, interiors, and still lifes - through a playful and modern lens. Rather than replicating historical imagery, he uses it as a springboard to explore how ideas of beauty and taste evolve over time. His bright colours and expressive brushwork give these familiar subjects a fresh sense of immediacy. In this painting, Dixon brings together a figure, an interior setting, and a handwritten phrase that adds a contemporary twist. The text introduces a note of humour and honesty, interrupting the otherwise composed scene and drawing attention to the contrast between outward appearance and inner thought. This approach reflects Dixon’s long standing interest in how images communicate more than what they show on the surface.Throughout his career, Dixon has developed a body of work that balances admiration for the past with a distinctly modern voice. His paintings invite viewers to reconsider familiar subjects, encouraging a renewed look at the objects, rooms, and figures that have long populated the history of art. This work offers a clear example of his ability to blend tradition with originality, marking Dixon as an important and continually evolving presence in contemporary Canadian painting.
