Dempsey Bob is widely regarded as one of the most influential Northwest Coast Indigenous carvers of his generation, both for the excellence of his artwork and for his role in cultural revitalization. Born in Telegraph Creek in 1948 and belonging to the Tahltan and Tlingit Nations, he emerged during a critical period and prioritized Indigenous carving traditions. He trained under master Haida carver Freda Diesing and later became a teacher himself, shaping multiple generations of artists. He also founded the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Arts in 2006.

Bob’s sculptural work bridges tradition and innovation. His sculptures - whether carved in wood or cast in bronze as seen here - draw deeply from Tahltan-Tlingit stories, clan identities, and formline design, yet they are unmistakably contemporary. He is known for creating works that feel alive, with figures that shift between human and animal states, expressing the fluidity of transformation central to Northwest Coast worldviews.

Frog's World represents an important moment in the artist’s mature period, when his mastery of Tahltan-Tlingit carving converged with a deep interest in narrative complexity and cultural continuity. This piece, composed of a vertical sequence of human, animal, and supernatural figures, reflects Bob’s commitment to telling layered ancestral stories through sculptural form. The sculpture’s stacked composition echoes the structure of crest poles, yet its compact scale and intimate detailing allow for a more personal encounter with the figures and their relationships. The human faces, carved with calm, introspective expressions, suggest the presence of ancestors or spirit helpers. Below them, the frog forms appear as embodiments of mythic power. The rounded contours, deep reliefs, smooth surfaces and flowing formline elements demonstrate Bob’s technical refinement at this stage of his important career.

Bob’s work is found in prominent museum collections, including the Canadian Museum of History, the Royal British Columbia Museum, the Smithsonian Institution and the National Museum of Ethnology in Japan. The artist was recently celebrated with a major touring retrospective exhibition of his work, Wolves: The Art of Dempsey Bob, which commenced at the Audain Art Museum and toured to the National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Kelowna Art Gallery in 2022 to 2024. Bob was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2013 for his contributions as a carver and teacher and for his dedication to Tahltan-Tlingit cultural preservation.
