Yseult Riopelle, Jean Paul Riopelle Catalogue Raisonné, Volume 5, 1972 - 1979, 2020, reproduced page 285, catalogue #1978.099H.1978
This 1978 painting by Jean Paul Riopelle exemplifies the mature phase of an artist widely recognized as one of Canada’s most influential figures in postwar abstraction. By this time in his career, Riopelle had abandoned the paintbrush in favour of the palette knife - a defining gesture that produced the dense, sculptural impasto seen across the surface of this work. His method of applying paint in thick, layered strokes creates a rich mosaic of colour and texture, a technique rooted in his association with the Automatistes and later with Lyrical Abstraction, where spontaneity and intuition guided the artistic process.
In this small scale composition, bursts of deep burgundy, pale yellow, turquoise, black and white collide in an energetic interplay, evoking natural forces in constant motion. Riopelle often drew inspiration from the vitality of the natural world - its unpredictability, rhythms, and organic structures - and this canvas reflects that sensibility. The palette knife technique produces feathered, blooming forms that seem to unfurl across the picture plane, suggesting a dynamic landscape without directly representing one.
By 1978, Riopelle was internationally established, celebrated for the very qualities seen in this painting: tactile complexity and a disciplined yet instinctive approach to abstraction. His work from this period represents a culmination of decades spent refining a language of layered colour and rhythmic fragmentation. The painting’s intensity, structural density, and lyrical movement attest to Riopelle’s enduring ability to transform raw pigment into an immersive, atmospheric experience. This work has sterling provenance which is reflected on the labels on verso - Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York, Acquavella Gallery, Nevada and Douglas Udell Gallery, Edmonton.
