The Estate of Ronald D. Barbaro

This intimate portrait of master mariner Captain Abraham Kean showcases David Blackwood’s masterful abilities as a draughtsman, a skill that lies at the foundations of his virtuosic technique as a printmaker.

This artwork comes to Heffel from the Estate of Ronald D. Barbaro. From humble beginnings, Barbaro rose throughout his life to the highest echelons of business and philanthropy. An innovative, global leader in the field of insurance, his advice was routinely sought by prominent politicians, captains of industry, and the foremost figures of culture and sport. An equally outstanding figure in the field of charity, his numerous international acknowledgments include his appointment to the Order of Ontario in 2006.

Among Barbaro’s many cultural engagements, he was a friend and devotee of David Blackwood, supporting some of the artist’s most important exhibitions, while encouraging fellow collectors of his work. The Barbaro Blackwood collection consists of some of the artist’s most recognized works, including his prized impression of Fire Down on the Labrador which is being offered as a part of Heffel’s 2025 fall live auction on November 19.

Collecting was one of Barbaro’s greatest passions, bringing immense joy and richness to his life. His engagement with art reflected both his curiosity and his deep appreciation for creativity, and it became a lasting source of fulfillment alongside his many professional and philanthropic pursuits.

The major exhibition David Blackwood: Myth and Legend opened October 8, 2025, at the Art Gallery of Ontario, proudly sponsored by the Heffel Foundation.
