LITERATURE
Paul Duval, A Vision of Canada: The McMichael Canadian Collection, 1973, page 123

Clarence Gagnon, a prominent French-Canadian painter associated with early 20th-century Canadian modernism, is widely known for his vivid depictions of rural Quebec and his innovative treatments of snow, light, and atmosphere. His works, as seen here, frequently integrate the rhythms of daily life into a broader vision of the Canadian wilderness, positioning human presence within a vast, carefully observed natural world.

Paul Duval comments: “Clarence Gagnon was the pictorial bard of rural Quebec. The life and the land of the habitant inspired him to some of the most engaging paintings ever made of the Canadian scene.”
