LITERATURE
A.K. Prakash, Independent Spirit: Early Canadian Women Artists, 2008, catalogued as oil on panel, reproduced page 139
In his 2008 book, Independent Spirit: Early Canadian Women Artists, A.K. Prakash describes this painting as such:
"Quebec Village is a powerful image in Seath's most representative mood - a mood engendered by experiences that taught her that life is neither classical nor pretty nor sordid or repellent.
The village scenes that A.Y. Jackson and Clarence Gagnon made famous with nostalgic charm convinced Canadians of the eternal tranquility of the small communities in Quebec. Seath approached them in another vein and revealed a strange, rich bleakness that surrounded them with an atmosphere that speaks of barren living. Quebec Village evokes the melancholy of rural Canada and expresses the artist's view of life in the monotonous villages, farm fields, and forlorn vistas of unoccupied land that was Quebec in the early decades of the twentieth century. Her view, although a complete antithesis to that of her male colleagues, was nevertheless essential to a complete understanding of the Canadian reality."
