Marius Barbeau, Cornelius Krieghoff: Pioneer Painter of North America, 1934, listed page 137
In his catalogue raisonné of Cornelius Krieghoff’s paintings published in 1934, Marius Barbeau described this work as follows:
Autumn foliage. Three Indians; one to left with Hudson’s Bay coat, sitting on a rock close to the Big Rock; one with ramrod and gun—buckskin coat; third skinning deer; river or lake to right; trail into woods to left. On frame behind, written in pencil, but not in artist’s handwriting: “May 20, 65.” Good quality.
