Arthur Lismer’s role as an arts educator was an extremely important element of his life. Progressive in his views, he believed that what students learn, particularly as children, should positively impact their whole identity, both personally and societally. He pioneered these ideas with popular courses begun at the Victoria School of Art and Design (now NSCAD University), which he later replicated at the Art Gallery of Toronto (now the Art Gallery of Ontario). In 1940, after being given a teaching appointment at the Art Association of Montreal (now the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts) he continued this approach, and it was there that this lovely and intimately observed oil sketch was most likely produced.

As captured in Allan Wargon’s 1951 National Film Board documentary short Lismer, his kind, inquisitive, and supportive presence was the foundation of his approach with all learners, be they young children or adult students. Deeply invested in his belief that genuine social betterment can emerge from a practical education in the arts, his humanistic influence impacted a great many of his students, both artists and non-artists alike.
