Marcelle Ferron pursued an innovative artistic career: travelling from her hometown to Louiseville, Quebec to Quebec City, Montreal, followed by an extended period in Paris, her work is defined by an energetic and lyrical approach to abstract painting and stained glass. It was in Montreal where Ferron would find her most enduring influence in artist and teacher Paul-Émile Borduas and the Automatistes, of which she would be an early member. It was during this time that Ferron would become a memorable figure in the development of a new language of Quebecois and Canadian painting. Abstract Composition, produced during her time in Paris while experimenting in glass-making techniques, is a superb demonstration of Ferron’s dynamism and vibrancy. Ferron’s textured, expressive marks constellate in the centre of her canvas. The brilliant scarlet reds feel embedded in the scene as the raven-like blacks dance around the embrace of the creamy white, melding and breeding bands of grey.
